Day 32

AVID Excel students in Mrs. Pridy's class take an AVID brain break.  With the demands of learning, it is important to remain balanced.  Brain breaks allow students a minute to stretch their body and refocus on their work.  We are learning that mindfulness training is important to achieving a healthy and balanced life for our students.  Way to go AVID Excel!

Day 31

The Annual Magazine and Cookie Dough sale is on today.  Students learned about our biggest yearly fundraiser during our Assembly today.  Check out the packet sent home with students or the HMS website for the link to purchase magazines and cookie dough.

Day 30

It's a hot week and a perfect time to learn and practice swimming in PE.  Students practiced survival floats, kicking and freestyle today.

Day 29

Science 7 students collaborated together today.  Students discussed and shared ideas using Google.  They focused on identifying characteristics of living things.

Day 28

Harvest students are leaders who care about serving the school.  During 6th grade Leadership Club, students stuffed materials for the Magazine Sale to support our school.  This is one of many clubs that students can get involved in during school hours.  Way to go 6th grade Leadership!

Day 27

Harvest Middle School morning break was full of energy as our Leadership students led our first ever rally in the quad.  Our ACE Soccer Teams were honored.  8th grade won the class competition in soccer drills and now has the Golden Hawk Egg displayed in the Wellness Center.  Leadership led the school in our school chant.  It was a great Friday morning to be an IB Hawk!  Thank you Leadership students for your risk-taking and open-mindedness.

Day 26

At Harvest, we value communication skills and believe that it is important to shake hands while looking people in the eye.  Watch our teachers at the beginning of every period shaking hands and greeting students.  The Harvest Administrative Team spent time introducing themselves to the Harvest students the past few weeks.  In return, the Harvest students were challenged to introduce themselves to an administrator.  Students were given Harvest business cards to have administrators sign as proof of the introduction.  One Advisory class per grade level with the most signed business cards gets a prize.  Our 8th graders are a very competitive bunch. Mrs. Jones was shaking hands all day.  Way to go 8th graders!

Day 25

Math 8 students collaborated to solve math problems with each other and Mr. Lewis today.  Students were using academic and math vocabulary to work through problems together.

Day 24

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, we focus on developing character along with academics.  The IB profile traits are the traits of the ideal graduate at Harvest.  Students learn to be: principled, thinkers, inquirers, risk-takers, caring, reflective, communicators, balanced, and open-minded.  Today our Students of the Month for August were acknowledged for being THINKERS!

Day 23

Eyes of the Hawk Journalism students are practicing their interview techniques today.  Check out hmsnews.org for their full publication.  IB Hawks are inquirers, communicators and thinkers.

Day 22

BBQ Day at Harvest Middle School.  Our students were excited to have BBQ lunch outside today.  Thank you to our Cafeteria staff for making Friday a fun and enjoyable lunch day.

Day 21

Today is AVID binder check day.  Our students are organized and ready for success with their binders clean and binder reminders filled out.  We are high school ready and college bound!

Day 20

Thank you to our families for partnering with us on Back to School Night!  We enjoyed opening our doors to our parents and building relationships.  It was incredible to see our International Spanish Academy and AVID Excel students translating throughout the evening.  Way to go, IB Hawks!

Day 19

As an International Baccalaureate World School, we believe in educating the whole child.  The robust elective program allows students to explore interests and passions.  Students have the opportunity to learn science through hands-on experiences in the garden.  Through Mrs. Fleming's garden class students practice inquiry and see results.  They learn self-management, communication and collaboration skills as they work together, as you see in this photo, to grow plants and raise chickens.  Thank you to Embassy Suites Napa Valley (Hilton) who partners with our garden.  The products of our garden are used in the kitchen at Embassy Suites.

Day 18

Students in Mrs. Hurtado's class analyzed political cartoons as a formative task to help them practice skills needed for their end of unit assessment.  Language Acquisition teachers observed as well during an informal learning walk.  Teachers learning from other teachers and students learning from other students!  Harvest is a learning focused community at all levels.

Day 17

In 6th grade science today, Harvest students had their hands on, hearts on and heads on as they tried to discover the content within boxes.  An International Baccalaureate education is learning through inquiry and what better way than to explore by testing hypotheses and working with others to discover new learning.

Day 16

At Harvest Middle School, we believe in educating the whole child.  Students have the opportunity to participate in many electives and one of those electives is instrumental.  In this photo, Mr. Day, our music teacher, is working with students on how to get a strong airflow in order to play a solid and steady note.  Come out in December when our Harvest Hawks are ready to show off for the community.

Day 15

Harvest students are balanced!  It's soccer season and our Harvest IB Hawks are out on the field after school playing with heart and body through the Napa County Office of Education ACE program.  Come out on Wednesdays and Fridays to see them compete against other middle school students from Napa and you will see our students collaborating by communicating, passing the ball, and celebrating.

Day 14

AVID 8 is showing they are high school ready and college bound.  Students participated in their first Socratic Seminar for the year.  This is a formal discussion where students use academic language and ask questions that lead to deep exploration of an issue.  AVID 8 was rocking their discussion yesterday.  Look out Napa High and Vintage High School; Harvest Hawks are ready to fly!

Day 13

Harvest Hawks gathered together as a team for the first assembly of the school year.  In celebration of World Humanitarian Day, students participated in a class competition called the Human Web.  The 7th grade class won Harvey the Hawk's Golden Egg.  Harvey's Golden Egg is a new tradition at Harvest Middle School.  Throughout the year, the grade levels will compete for the Golden Egg.  When a grade level wins the egg, they get to decorate it and see it on display in the Wellness Center.  We can't wait to see how 7th grade decorates the egg.  Go #ibhawks!

Day 12

Get ready IB Hawks!  Tomorrow is the first day that the Hawk Store will be open.  Bring your Hawk Eyes and win.  Congratulations on demonstrating the IB Learner Profile Traits.  You are risk-takers, caring, principled, inquirers, knowledgeable, balanced, thinkers, open-minded, communicators, and reflective!

Day 11

Mrs. Tate's Individuals and Societies 6th grade students learned how to take Cornell Notes today.  Harvest uses AVID strategies school-wide to help students acquire Approaches to Learning skills.  Cornell Notes are interactive notes that students can use to study and retain information.  6th grade is getting high school ready!
