Communication is an important skill in NVUSD and Harvest Middle School. In math today, students were communicating by collaborating with their small group, showing their work on the board, sharing out their reasoning and asking deeper level questions. Mrs. Smith's class shows in this picture how students are presenting at the board and asking questions that check for understanding.

Harvest Middle School uses AVID strategies school-wide to support all students with the development of approaches to learning skills. In math and science, students use interactive notebooks (INB) to process their thinking and deepen their learning. Today our students set up their INBs in Miss Hoxsie's math class.

Mrs. Pridy 6th grade math class wrote a classroom statement: "In our ideal math class we can understand math easier by working together respectfully and by helping each other." Harvest students learn to self-manage, communicate and collaborate in order to be successful scholars. This is a perfect example.

At Harvest, we are focusing on building relationship with students and engaging students in content through relationships. Miss Clark's wall is one of many examples of how teachers are kicking off the year differently in order to build relationships and make connections with students in the classroom. Her wall is full of Post-Its written by students answering, "What is your hope?" We can't wait for their hopes to become reality.

Our first lunch of the school year and the Harvest Middle School Student Store was full of students. Thank you to Parent Faculty Club for providing our students with this fun opportunity on campus. Parents are welcome to volunteer in the Student Store during lunch. Our first PFC Meeting is September 8, 2016.

Mr. Scharff's science class is learning routines that will help them succeed as scientists in 8th grade this year. Students learned the different formations they will use to collaborate: partners, small group, and community square. Building teams in the classroom is a focus at Harvest this year and we can't wait to see and hear how successful students are when they have a team to support their learning!

Harvest Middle School officially became an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle School in April 2016. The transformation to inquiry-based teaching and learning is the result of a clear vision, commitment to student learning and team work. The leading coach in the implementation of IB is Jenny Banta who we honored today at our staff meeting. Her "why" for being an educator is kids and Harvest is lucky to have her on our team. Go Banta! Your #ibhawks appreciate all you do!
